Ingredient:
- oil, as needed, for frying
- 2 eggs
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup vegetable oil
- 1 cup evaporated milk
- 5 cups all-purpose flour
FILLING:
- dried apples or fresh apples, sliced and confectioners' sugar, for dusting, if desired
Direction:
Mix eggs, baking powder, sugar and salt. Add oil and milk and stir well. Mix in flour, one cup at a time. Knead well until smooth.
Divide the dough into ten pieces. Roll out each piece into a circle of dough. Place two to three heaping tablespoons of dried or fresh apple slices in center of each round. Fold over and crimp edges with a fork. Deep fry until golden brown in pre-heated p an of oil.
Dust with powdered sugar, if desired.

Ingredient:
- 1 peck 4 to 6 inch pickles
4 grape or horseradish leaves
1 bunch dill weed
6 qts. water
2 tbsp. alum
1 1/2 pt. vinegar
1 1/2 c. canning salt
8 cloves garlic, optional
A 4 gal. crock
Direction: Wash and place in crock; pickles, grape (or horseradish) leaves and dill. Boil together water, vinegar, salt, and alum for at least 5 minutes. Cool and pour over pickles. Weight with plate to keep pickles covered with brine solution and cure for 10 days. You may add garlic after the eighth day. Let cure in a cool place. |
